How linguistic constraints on movement conspireto yield languagesanalyzable with a restricted form of LIGs

چکیده
Within a GB{like framework movement out of an object seems to be a valid concept for the description of natural languages whereas movement out of subjects and adjuncts is almost impossible. In a framework in which the notion object is determined conng-urationally, this condition on movement restricts the class of licensed structures. We will argue that this condition restricts as well the class of languages that can be generated. In order to study formal properties we transfer this condition to linear indexed grammars and deene two new formalisms: right linear indexed grammars and extended right linear indexed grammar. The classes of languages generated are proper subclasses of the class of linear indexed languages. In fact, we show that right linear indexed grammars are weakly equivalent to context free grammars, despite of the possibility to have in a derivation for each nonterminal an associated index stack (of unbounded depth). 1 Motivation Within a GB{like framework movement out of an object seems to be a valid concept for the description of natural languages whereas movement out of subjects, adjuncts and indirect objects is almost impossible (see e.g. M uller This paper has been worked out within the Innovationskolleg`Formale Modelle kog-nitiver Komplexitt at' (INK 12) funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Pragmatic expressions in cross-linguistic perspective
This paper focuses on some pragmatic expressions that are characteristic of informal spoken English, their possible equivalents in some other languages, and their use by EFL learners from different backgrounds. These expressions, called general extenders (e.g. and stuff, or something), are shown to be different from discourse markers and to exhibit variation in form, funct...
متن کاملMainland Chinese Students’ Shifting Perceptions of Chinese-English Code-Mixing in Macao
As a former Portuguese colony, Macao is the only region in China where Cantonese, a variety of Chinese, and English, an international language, are enjoying de facto official statuses, with Putonghua being a quasi-official language and Portuguese being another official language. Recently, with an increasing number of Mainland Chinese students crossing the border to pursue their tertiar...
متن کاملOn the Applicability of Global Index Grammars
We investigate Global Index Grammars (GIGs), a grammar formalism that uses a stack of indices associated with productions and has restricted context-sensitive power. We discuss some of the structural descriptions that GIGs can generate compared with those generated by LIGs. We show also how GIGs can represent structural descriptions corresponding to HPSGs (Pollard and Sag, 1994) schemas.
متن کاملEffect of Child Friendly Constraint Induced Movement Therapy on Unimanual and Bimanual Function in Hemiplegia
Objectives: Hemiplegia is a non-progressive damage in premature growing brain which causes movement disorders in one side of the body. The objective of present research is to study the method of modified constraints induced movement therapy (CIMT) which can be appropriate on unimanual and bimanual functions of children with Hemiplegia. Methods: This single-blinded, randomized, control trial ...
متن کاملBourdieu and Genette in Paratext: How Sociology Counts in Linguistic Reasoning
While Bourdieu’s theory of practice provides an ensemble of conceptual tools which analyze patterns of social life that are irreducible to the limiting view of individuals as free-acting agents, Genette’s paratextual theory offers the metalanguage necessary to account for the microcosm of paratext as a linguistic space. This study takes issue with unidirectional approaches to researching parate...
